The word "hydrangea" has Greek origins, with "hydros" meaning water and "angos" meaning jar. To the Greeks, this beautiful flower resembled a pitcher of water, but in modern day, people are more likely to compare them to the pom poms they see many cheerleaders clutching during their routines.
Jars and pom poms aside, where did this flower come from? Over 75 species of hydrangea and the majority are native to Asia. However, the Japanese people were the first to begin cultivating them. It wasn't until 1736 that the first hydrangea graced European soil, when an American colonist brought back an American variety on a visit.
The interesting thing about hydrangea is that its symbolic meaning varies across cultures. In Japan, the flower symbolizes apology and acknowledgement, but in Victorian England it represented arrogance and pride.
Hydrangea comes in five colors: white, blue, pink, purple and green.
